Bastion Group unveils $180m surf-inspired tower in Surfers Paradise as workbook tops $500m

Gold Coast-based property developer Bastion Group has backed up a successful run from its debut project at Chevron Island with the launch of Surfer, a $180 million, 30-storey residential tower in Surfers Paradise.

The project, to be located on the corner of Vista Street and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, pushes Bastion's development portfolio beyond $500 million and follows the company's debut project, the $184 million Nera tower, construction of which is currently underway.

Surfer will comprise 100 residences split across two categories - 75 short-stay apartments targeting lifestyle-led investors and 25 private luxury residences designed for owner-occupiers with prices starting from $995,000.

The project will also include a ground-floor retail and dining precinct.

Bastion Group founder and CEO Alex Wood says the tower was conceived as a direct expression of Gold Coast surf culture rather than a conventional coastal apartment project.

“Surfer will bring together world-class architecture, authentic surf culture and a lifestyle-driven amenity suite designed for a premium buyer seeking elevated coastal living,” says Wood.

“We’re incredibly proud to launch Surfer as a project that embodies the heart of the Gold Coast, surfing.

“This project has been shaped by intentional design and a clear vision for what modern Gold Coast living should be and seeing it move from concept to launch is a milestone for our team and a moment of genuine excitement for Bastion.

“We are looking forward to bringing this project to market and to share it with buyers who truly value the lifestyle this city offers.”

The tower has been designed by architect Joe Snell of Studio Snell, with landscape architecture by Jamie Durie.

Professional surfers Dane Henry and Milla Coco Brown contributed to the design of the building's wellness and lifestyle spaces, while fitness centre design was handled by EMF.

Wood says the project's dual residential model is structured to serve two distinct buyer profiles on the Gold Coast – those chasing lifestyle and those chasing a return.

The short-stay component targets investors seeking exposure to the Gold Coast's tourism-driven accommodation market, while the private residences occupy the upper levels of the tower with larger floorplans aimed at permanent residents.

Bastion Group launched in 2023 with Nera, a 29-storey tower on Chevron Island that marked the company's entry into the Gold Coast development market. The company reveals that Nera is edging closer to a sellout.

The firm positions itself at the intersection of design-led residential development and hospitality-influenced lifestyle amenity.

“We’re big believers in creating timeless projects that are unique to the Gold Coast through intentional and authentic design,” says Wood.

“Each of our projects begins with a clear purpose to create places that will remain relevant, valued and enduring for generations.”

Bastion operates a fully integrated model that includes development and construction through to long-term property management.

The project, to be located on the corner of Vista Street and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, pushes Bastion's development workbook beyond $500 million and follows the company's debut project, the $184 million Nera tower, construction of which is currently under way.
